The Human Genome

The Human Genome
The human body never ceases to amaze scientists. In an attempt to understand it better, a collaborative research project called the internationalhuman genome project(HGP) was funded by government of around 18 countries.

The scientists accomplished the stupendous task of prepairing a blue print of all DNA in human body, collectively called the human genome. DNA consists of different pairings of four similar chemicals. the sequence in which these chemicals occurs in the DNA determine the physical and mental framework of an individual. The HGP studied all these sequences (3 billion pairs) and also identified 20,000 genes that are the building blocks of our body.

The path breaking findings released in 2003 will enabled scientists to understand human biology like never before. It is the groundwork for future gene therapy. we can look forward to new ways of diagnosis, treating and even preventing various disorders that affects us.

STEM CELLS

In 1998 the scientific community was taken by storm when human embryonic stem cells were isolated in a lab.these special cells have the potential to develop into any kind of specialised human cell like a blood cell or a brain cell. research on stem cell in the last decade has spelt new hope for patients suffering from cancer, spinal injuries, parkinsons alzheimer's and other dreaded diseases. stem cell transplant have improved the chances of survival among patients sufering from acute myeloid leukemia.
